For many people, the term "mineral oil" does not represent much in the way of a concrete product: at best, a guarantee of quality (minerals, nature) or neutral, non-impacting ingredients. However, the reality is quite different. Immersion in the land of oils where we discover the hidden side of certain words and the dark side of a part of the cosmetic universe!

What are we hiding from mineral oils?

Stable, stainless, odourless, colourless, mineral oils are highly prized by the cosmetics industry. Less expensive than their vegetable cousins, do these oils have everything to please?

Mineral oils are derived from petrochemicals and are not biodegradable. Polluting, their impact on the environment is proven. Moreover, these inert oils have no curative interest for the skin and have no nutritional quality (neither vitamin nor antioxidant). And yet, they are often found in certain cosmetic products. Totally synthetic, they do not provide any benefits for the skin, hair or body. In cosmetics, many brands use mineral oils. But if you stop using this product, you will see that your skin has not improved at all. It will go back to its normal state, without any progression. So check the INCI list (ingredients) of your products! (Examples at the bottom of this article).

In an article dated 29/09/17, the CFU Que Choisir warns: "Mineral oils (Mosh) can cause inflammatory reactions. Worse still, they can be composed of Moah, aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons that are carcinogenic products. The toxicity of Mosh and Moah has already been revealed by the European Food Safety Agency in 2012. The agency has warned that Mosh and Moah are of concern in food products. »

The effects of mineral oils on the skin

In addition, know that if you have skin problems, mineral oil will not help! On the contrary, they tend to cause acne and clog the pores of the skin. As you know, they do not benefit your skin, are comedogenic and toxic. They are used in cosmetics because they are occlusive, i.e. they form a film on the skin to limit dehydration. But they do not nourish your skin and are not biodegradable.

How is a mineral oil made?

Mineral oils are synthetic materials obtained by distillation and refining of fossil fuels (crude oil, coal and some shales). Yes yes, you read that right... oil!

Unfortunately, these mineral oils can be found in some consumer food products, while they are also used to preserve clothing leathers, wood and putty. They are also used as a laxative or stain remover for oil stains...

What is a vegetable oil?

By definition, a vegetable oil is a fatty substance extracted from an oleaginous plant. This means that it is a plant whose seeds, fruits or nuts contain lipids. Oily macerates and vegetable butters are generally referred to as "vegetable oil".

In ancient times, vegetable oils already occupied a prominent place in beauty rituals. Extracted from fruits or seeds, these oils offer unrivalled properties. Rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, these oils have undeniable cosmetic benefits (soothing, anti-inflammatory, nourishing, regenerating, firming, anti-aging) and are environmentally friendly. Vegetable oils are perfectly tolerated by the epidermis, and there is no risk of skin reaction or allergy. So they have everything to please! The main advantage of these oils is that only a few drops are needed to take care of your skin!

How are vegetable oils made?

There are 4 extraction methods, but we will talk about cold extraction because this is how most of our oils are extracted and it is also the most used for vegetable oils. Cold mechanical extraction allows us to have a very pure oil that preserves all its virtues. As its name indicates, the product is not heated, unlike hot pressing, used by industrialists, which requires several treatments in order to achieve the final result of the oil.

Extracted from oleaginous plants, vegetable oils have been used for a very long time. Among the most famous oleaginous plants are the olive tree, the almond tree, the coconut tree, the argan tree...

Vegetable oils are a very important asset for the good health of our skin. They are all composed of 99% triglycerides (fats). Unlike mineral oils, they do not remain on the surface of the epidermis, but will pass through it. Vegetable oils are therefore ideal for dry to very dry skin because they will be treated in depth.

The argan tree, for example, is world-famous for all the benefits that its oil brings us, which are no longer to be proven today. Argan oil, in addition to being incredibly nourishing, is also a natural antioxidant that is widely used in cosmetics. 

If you have sensitive skin, prefer to use avocado or sweet almond oil, known for their nourishing properties that are suitable for all skin types.

In addition to being very good for the body, they are also incredible for the hair. If you have dry and brittle hair you can apply jojoba or avocado vegetable oil to your hair either by making masks or by applying a few drops to dry or damp hair. 

The virtues of vegetable oils are so numerous that some of them can even be used for your homemade after-sun care. Coconut oil or carrot oil are ideal for moisturizing and preserving the tan after sun exposure.

In short, using vegetable oil is a healthy asset for the skin!

The benefits of vegetable oils for problem skins

In addition to being good natural products for body and hair, vegetable oils are also particularly recommended for problem skin.

For example, hazelnut oil is a sebum-regulating oil, which means that it will help to regulate excess sebum and make small imperfections such as mild acne disappear. It is very suitable for combination and oily skin. What's more, it smells amazing... A few drops of oil and your skin can only say thank you!

Do the oils give you oily skin?

You might think that oils give pimples or an oily effect to the skin because they are oily, but that's a myth. Some oils are even ideal for regulating excess sebum! Depending on your skin type, you will be able to find, among all the vegetable oils that exist, the oil that will be adapted to your skin.

If you have very sensitive skin or couperose, choose avocado oil or even apricot kernel oil. The latter softens even the driest skin while providing a healthy glow.

Linum Usitatissimum Seed Oil:

Vegetable oil from oat bran (Avena Sativa Kernel Oil):

An essential element for delicate and sensitive skin, it soothes and softens your skin day after day. It is an oil particularly rich in ceramides and phytosterols. It also helps to protect the epidermis and is an excellent anti-ageing agent. You can add a few drops to your daily skin care or apply it undiluted. The skin is then supple and soft, and its delicious cereal smell is a delight!

Vegetable rapeseed oil (Brassica Campestris Seed Oil) :

This product is mainly made to moisturize the epidermis. In addition, its vitamin E composition gives it an antioxidant character. The skin is rid of all its impurities and toxins that clog the pores and promote the appearance of spots and pimples. The skin becomes smooth and purified. The healthy-glow effect is guaranteed. Plum vegetable oil (Prunus Domestica Seed Oil) :

Soothing and softening: Plum oil is very rich in oleic acid, a fatty acid naturally present in human sebum. It will therefore help to strengthen the skin's hydrolipidic film. Plum oil thus makes the skin softer and calms the irritations of dry skin.

Carrot maceration (Daucus Carota Sativa Root Extract) :

Carrot oil looks good and has antioxidant properties. It neutralizes free radicals and fights against skin aging. It also participates in cell regeneration in case of lesions, for example due to psoriasis or acne.

Sunflower vegetable oil (Helianthus Annuus Hybrid Oil) :

Very rich in omega 6 (linoleic acid) and vitamin E, it is ideal for very dry skin lacking in nutrition. Softening and nourishing, it is perfectly suited to dry to very dry skin as it helps prevent and fight dehydration.

Prickly pear vegetable oil (Opuntia Ficus Indica Seed Oil) :

Its exceptional vitamin E content helps fight against skin ageing. Because it also contains omega 6 and is rich in sterols (lipids), it is a powerful ally in the fight against skin ageing. The skin retains all its suppleness and remains toned, day after day.

Borage vegetable oil (Borago Officinalis Seed Oil) :

Simply place the bottle under a trickle of hot water for a few moments and its contents will liquefy. Coconut oil is a must for skin and hair. Protective, softening, emollient, you can even use it for cooking! And we won't talk about its exotic and sweet fragrance... simply addictive!

Vegetable oil of sweet almond (Prunus Amydgalus Dulcis Oil) :

Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, sweet almond oil is ideal for dry to very dry skin. It will soothe itching and irritation that may be caused by external aggressions.

Camelina Sativa Seed Oil:

Naturally rich in omega 3 fatty acids, it soothes inflammation and reduces redness. It is ideal as an anti-ageing treatment and is particularly recommended for atopic skin (with an allergic tendency).

Sesamum Indicum Seed Oil:

A real asset in cosmetic anti-ageing products. It softens your skin thanks to its richness in essential fatty acids. It regenerates skin tissue while being antioxidant.

Hazelnut vegetable oil (Corylus Avellana Seed Oil) :

Softening and nourishing, hazelnut oil is suitable for all skin types, protecting them from dehydration. It is one of the richest vegetable oils in omega 3. Thanks to the phytosterols it contains, hazelnut oil has a repairing and healing action. It is recommended in case of acne and blackheads since it regulates the production of sebum. Rosa Rubiginosa Seed Oil:

Why an oil and not a cream?
