The benefits of coconut oil

WHAT IS COCONUT OIL?

Coconut oil is a natural vegetable oil extracted from the white flesh of the coconut. Originally from South-East Asia and Polynesia, it is now mainly produced in Indonesia, India, the Philippines and Brazil. It can be obtained in different ways:

Industrial process: the coconut is harvested, dried and preserved for several months. Its flesh is then grated, crushed, heated and mechanically pressed. Then it is refined, bleached and mixed with chemicals to stabilize its colour and consistency. It is then called copra oil.

Artisanal process: in this case, the fruit is most often organically grown and quickly processed. The flesh of the coconut is cold-pressed, so as to preserve all the benefits of coconut oil. The oil is neither refined nor bleached, but only filtered and bottled. It is pure and its countless properties are fully preserved.

You will have understood it, to make the most of all the benefits of coconut oil, we choose virgin, obtained by first cold pressing, and organic!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL?

Moisturizing, soothing, antioxidant... coconut oil is full of benefits. It can be used without moderation on the skin and hair, and can replace many beauty products. It is a perfect substitute for make-up remover, toothpaste, deodorant, hair masks and day cream. When applied to the face, it is reserved for dry skin. However, with a comedogenicity index of 4 out of 5, it is not recommended for oily and/or acne-prone skin.

In cooking, coconut oil can be used instead of the traditional butternut, olive oil or sunflower oil. This vegetable alternative, healthy and nutritious, has the advantage of withstanding cooking at high temperatures, unlike walnut or rapeseed oil. Excellent for the cardiac system, for the cerebral system, antimicrobial and helping to burn fat, it participates in the proper functioning of the body. Despite its high content of saturated fatty acids, it protects the arteries and the heart. In fact, the body uses these acids immediately, without storing them.

WHAT'S IN COCONUT OIL?

If the benefits of coconut oil are so numerous, it is thanks to its composition exceptionally rich in fatty acids, vitamins and phytosterols:

FATTY ACID

Omega 9: coconut oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. Indeed, it contains between 5 and 8% oleic acids omega 9, known for their ability to reduce bad cholesterol and protect the arteries and cardiovascular system. Anti-inflammatory, they nourish, moisturize and soften the skin.

Omega 6: we find 1 to 3 % of polyunsaturated fatty acids omega 6. These linoleic acids play an essential role in the proper development of the brain, and offer an anti-inflammatory action to reduce oxidative stress, responsible for the aging of our cells.

Omega 3: Coconut oil also contains up to 0.2% of omega 3 alpha-linoleic acids, which are essential for the proper functioning of the human body, as they are involved in the proper functioning of our nervous system. Also anti-inflammatory, they protect the skin and cells from the effects of time.

This oil is also high in saturated fatty acids such as lauric acid, palmitic acid, myristic acid, caprylic acid and capric acid. The latter, although they can cause excess cholesterol in the blood, are good for preventing arteriosclerosis and the risk of cardiovascular disease.

VITAMINS

Vitamin E: This vitamin, known as tocopherol, is essential to the proper functioning of the human body. Its antioxidant properties protect cells from oxidation and thus from premature aging. It is also anti-inflammatory and preserves the youthfulness of the skin.

Vitamin A: it activates melanin, a natural pigment known to give the skin its colour. It protects it from UV rays(prepare your skin for the sun naturally, it's possible, read our article!). It also promotes the hydration of the epidermis.

There are also vitamins B3, B5 and B6, which help to fight against cholesterol, protect cells from the sun's rays, and contribute to the proper maintenance of the immune system. Beware, coconut oil is not a substitute for sun protection.

PHYTOSTEROLS

Phytosterols have the ability to soothe, repair and deeply nourish the skin. The skin is regenerated, relieved, softened and more supple!

HOW TO APPLY COCONUT OIL?

Tip: Coconut oil is solid below 20°C. To liquefy it and to be able to use it, it is enough to pass the bottle a few seconds under a net of hot water.

CLEANSING

Coconut oil can replace make-up remover and moisturiser, provided you do not have combination or oily skin, as it is a fairly "heavy" oil that can lead to the appearance of blackheads.

Take a little coconut oil from the palm of your hands and apply to the entire face. Massage with the pulp of your fingers in gentle circular motions. To remove all traces of mascara (even waterproof), gently wipe your lashes between your thumb and forefinger, without rubbing. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. You can then cleanse your face with a washing gel or neutral soap, then apply your usual care.

AS A NIGHT CREAM

Coconut oil can also be used instead of night cream. Simply apply a few drops to a clean, dry face and gently massage the excess into the skin.

AROUND THE EYES

Coconut oil is an excellent eye contour, perfect for smoothing and moisturizing this particularly fine, fragile area, sensitive to the first signs of aging.

IN DAY CARE

In the morning, use a lighter day cream to avoid shine, such as an organic cold cream enriched with coconut oil for example! You can add one or two drops to your usual day cream and put a drop on your lips to nourish and delicately perfume them.

ON THE BODY

Antioxidant, soothing, nourishing, softening and deliciously sweet, coconut oil is used on dry skin, just after showering. It is applied by massaging the body from bottom to top to stimulate blood circulation.

Its soothing properties make it a great ally to soothe sun-heated skin, or to relieve eczema sufferers.

Coconut oil takes a little time to penetrate, so it is perfect as a massage oil!

ON THE HAIR

Apply the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to your hair, insisting on the lengths and ends. Wrap your hair in a warm towel and leave on overnight. The next morning, rinse thoroughly with warm water and then wash your hair with your usual shampoo. A treatment reserved for dry and/or frizzy hair! For oily hair with dry ends, do the same by applying coconut oil only to the ends.

HOW TO STORE COCONUT OIL?

Coconut oil can be stored in its original packaging, away from light. Ideally, place it in a cool, dry place (forget the refrigerator, as the oil will then become much too hard). This way, you can use it for 2 years before you have to invest in a new bottle!
