Maskné: taking care of your skin by wearing the mask

Maskné: taking care of your skin by wearing the mask

04/06/2020

Wearing masks became widespread with the Covid-19 Coronavirus crisis. Although it is important to wear it to limit the spread of the virus, our skin does not always tolerate it very well. Redness, dehydration, discomfort, irritation, acne... How to take care of your skin with the mask? Find out how to preserve your skin from the mask.

What is the masked one?

Maskne is born from the contraction of "mask" and "acne". This term refers to the skin condition caused by wearing a protective mask. This condition is located around the nose and mouth, where the mask is worn. Masked skin is caused by a combination of factors associated with wearing a mask: mechanical friction, heat, poor air circulation, perspiration, and the presence of moisture. All of these factors disrupt the skin's ecosystem and create the conditions for the appearance of pimples. Under the mask, pores become clogged, germs proliferate and the skin produces more sebum. As a result, acne forms on the skin. This acne can take the form of discreet pimples and blackheads, but can also be more severe and even lead to cystic acne.

Wearing a mask: how does the skin react?

To understand why your skin is affected by the mask, it is necessary to look at its mechanism. The skin of our face is thin and reacts quickly when it is disturbed by external aggressions. So naturally, when our face is covered for several hours during the day, it is a bit upset... Wearing a mask causes friction on the skin when we move or talk. As a result, our epidermis is irritated and this leads to redness, tingling and itching. Surgical masks would tend to accentuate these irritations due to their synthetic neoprene composition and favour the appearance of acne, hence the mask.

Our skin confined under the mask isn't breathing as usual. Fog forms between the face and the mask and heat builds up. This change in the hot and humid "climate" in the cheeks and mouth can cause skin disorders. Perspiration does not drain properly and the pores of the skin become blocked. The atmosphere is then conducive to the development of acne or rosacea. The skin on our nose is very thin.

As a result, the mask resting and rubbing on it can weaken it and damage the skin barrier (all the more so if the mask is too tight). This is one of the reasons why the mask phenomenon appears more quickly and more intensely on the nose. In people whose skin is already fragile and sensitive, the problems can vary from the appearance of eczema, psoriasis, excess sebum production or more or less strong maskedness. If these minor inconveniences do not improve, consult your dermatologist. The back of our ears can also be irritated by the elastic band of the mask that runs over them. When taking care of your face, don't forget to pamper this area if you feel any discomfort.

How to preserve your skin from maskné?

Fortunately it is possible to anticipate the masked one or at least to limit its impact!

Alternate with a cloth mask

face mask

First of all, wearing a mask made of a fabric made of cotton is less irritating to the skin and allows it to breathe more. In addition to helping to fight the phenomenon of maskedness, the cloth mask is better from an ecological point of view. Indeed, these washable fabric masks are more environmentally friendly.

Avoid masked skin by applying a moisturizer.

To start your skin care, apply an organic moisturizing cream about 30 minutes before putting on your mask. This preliminary application will protect the mask from irritation and rubbing. Your skin will have time to absorb the treatment properly. When choosing your cream, it is preferable to avoid products composed of preservatives, parabens and chemical fragrances. Turn to organic products with natural compositions that respect your skin. As mentioned above, don't forget to moisturize the back of your ears if they are irritated.

Opt for gentle cleaning

To prevent the appearance of masks, it is important to cleanse your face to eliminate the accumulation of sebum and perspiration that suffocates your skin. However, it is useless to use aggressive products that could strip your skin and make it even more fragile. Morning and evening, make sure you use a gentle cleansing gel . A cleansing gel enriched with pure aloe vera juice soothes, moisturizes and helps to heal the skin (discover all the benefits of aloe vera). If you are sensitive to hard or chlorinated water (especially in large cities), you can sprayrose water after cleansing to remove lime residue and soothe your skin. To bring a little comfort to the attacked areas, you can apply a moisturizing mask once or twice a week. Enriched with rice powder, an ingredient known for its nourishing, regenerating and softening properties, our moisturizing white mask will restore softness to your skin and protect it.

Limit make-up

As far as make-up is concerned, it is best to limit it as much as possible. Foundations that cover too much will contribute to further clogging your pores and promote maskiness. If you still want to apply something to camouflage small pimples, opt for lightweight formulas with natural ingredients. The best way to do this is to leave your skin natural under the mask. You are now ready to combine wearing the mask and skin care!
