Moisturizing the skin: why not skip it?

Moisturizing the skin: why not skip it?

08/05/2021

We all dream of beautiful, supple, bouncy skin. Beyond these purely aesthetic considerations, the skin forms a body envelope responsible for protecting our organism from external aggressions. Taking care of it is therefore essential, not only to preserve its youthfulness, but also to help it fully play its role as a protective shield.

WHY PROTECT YOUR SKIN?

TO PROTECT IT FROM EXTERNAL AGGRESSION

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It envelops the skin and is therefore at the forefront of external aggressions: wind, pollution, temperature variations, UV rays, prolonged baths, hot showers, overly hot cosmetic products literally wear down the epidermis, the most superficial layer of the skin.

On the surface of this epidermis is the horny layer. It is made up of dead cells linked together by the hydrolipidic film, an emulsion of water and fat, in other words perspiration and sebum. It is precisely this layer that serves as a bulwark for our organism and maintains the level of hydration present in the skin. Tired, overworked and exposed to the elements, it gradually loses this protective film. The skin then becomes dry, rough, reactive, and must be softened at all costs. This is why it is more than essential to moisturize your skin by regularly applying nourishing and/or moisturizing products!

TO SLOW DOWN SKIN AGING

All of our cells age with time, it's inevitable. External aggressions are just one more factor altering the youthfulness of the skin. This natural phenomenon is called senescence: the activity of the sebaceous and sweat glands decreases, the rate of cell renewal slows down, the number of melanocytes (epithelial cells of the epidermis that synthesize melanin) and the collagen level decreases while the dermis loses its elasticity.

The result: skin dries out, sags, the complexion becomes dull, with spots and wrinkles appearing. While there is no magic formula to counteract this degeneration, it can be slowed down by a balanced lifestyle, a varied diet and the application of protective cosmetics. Moisturizing your skin is essential to rebuild its protective barrier deep down. Beware, there is no question of oily skin going without hydration! Just apply a light-textured skin care product that absorbs excess sebum.

TO GIVE IT SOME SPARKLE

The problem with poorly hydrated skin is that it tends to become dull. The complexion turns grey, lacks luminosity and homogeneity. Here too, there are many causes: fatigue, stress, nicotine, hormonal imbalances, lack of sunlight and too little hydration are responsible for this "papier-mâché" look. Indeed, the lack of hydration implies a whitening of the epidermis cells at the origin of this greyish complexion.

This problem affects all skin types, whether young or mature, dry, oily and/or reactive and sensitive. It is mistakenly thought that only the driest of them need care aimed at reconstituting the hydrolipidic film. This is a mistake. The skin barrier needs to be protected and strengthened, regardless of skin type! Good hydration helps to restore its radiance and soften it. This gesture must become a reflex.

WHICH COSMETIC PRODUCTS SHOULD YOU USE TO MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN?

So you'll understand that moisturizing your skin is just as important as daily cleansing or make-up removal at the end of the day. While all skin types need this essential hydration for their health and beautiful complexion, everyone needs to be pampered with the right skin care products.

There are a multitude of products on the cosmetics market designed to soften and moisturize the skin: balms, vegetable oils, body milks, moisturizing or nourishing creams... While all of them aim to soften the epidermis, each one is not necessarily suitable for this or that type of skin.

MOISTURIZE OILY SKIN

Oily skin is not just for teenagers! It is a skin type and not a temporary condition of the epidermis, characterized by an excess of sebum, which can lead to the presence of blackheads, microcysts and dilated pores. The T-zone, i.e. the forehead, nose and chin, tends to glow. To take care of it, you should cleanse the skin daily with gentle products (no need to strip, this would only increase sebum production), perform a scrub and/or a clay mask once or twice a week, and above all moisturize it every day! Because yes, oily skin can be dehydrated and need a water supply!

To moisturize oily skin, we turn to products with a fluid and light texture, richer in water than in lipids. The skin should not be suffocated. Choose an organic aloe vera gel, as light as water, mattifying and sebo-regulating, to be applied every morning after washing. It is also possible to use vegetable oils such as jojoba oil, ideal for regulating sebum and reducing shine!

MOISTURIZE COMBINATION SKIN

Combination skin is characterized by oily and dry areas. Most often, the T-zone is affected by excess sebum while the cheeks suffer from dryness. It suffers from a real imbalance that is not always easy to counteract and is notably the ideal candidate for the ritual of multimasking, a Japanese technique that consists of applying different masks according to the needs of each area of the face. Combination skin needs to be moisturized and regulated.

To moisturize combination skin, moisturizing creams, such as an organic hyaluronic acid cream, are preferred after morning cleansing. The must? A cream that moisturizes and mattifies. Indeed, it will be more loaded with lipids than a water-based gel, but less heavy than a balm. In the evening, after applying a make-up remover oil rinsed with clear water, apply a repairing cream specially designed for combination skin. It is quite possible to choose a richer treatment only on dry areas in order to nourish them in depth, without greasing the parts of the face that do not need it.

MOISTURIZE DRY SKIN

Your skin feels tight, itchy, tingling, rough, scaly, and is particularly sensitive and irritable. It lacks the fatty acids that bind the epidermis cells together, but may also be lacking in water. It can therefore be dry by nature, but can also be dehydrated on occasion.

To moisturize dry skin, do not hesitate to perform a gentle exfoliation once a week. Stimulated and regenerated, the skin is thus rid of dead cells accumulated on the surface, and the lipidic film is reconstructed. We then turn to richer textures, such as an organic cold-cream, which we apply generously morning and evening to clean, dry skin. Vegetable oils such as argan, avocado and sweet almond oil are also particularly recommended. Finally, a face mask should be applied once or twice a week, for a deeply nourished epidermis!

Whatever your skin type, never forget:

- that hot showers and baths are not recommended;

- to privilege soft, natural and organic products;

- Introduce products rich in omega 3, omega 6 and vitamin E into your diet (oily fish, avocados, nuts, green vegetables, red fruits, rapeseed, olive and peanut oil, etc.);

- to drink 1.5 litres of water per day (natural, coconut water, vegetable milks, aloe vera juice...) !
